WHOOPI GOLDBERG is DEFENDING ESPN talking head STEPHEN A. SMITH, who’s currently Taking heat for some dumb comments he made about domestic violence last week.
On Friday, Smith was talking about RAY RICE’S suspension for knocking his then-fiancée out cold . . . and he said that while no one should hit anyone else, a woman should do HER part not to, quote, “do anything to provoke wrong actions.”
He added, quote, “We also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation.” This came up because Ray’s fiancée . . . and now-wife . . . admitted that she hit Ray FIRST.
Whoopi didn’t endorse Smith’s entire rant, but she DID agree with part of the point he was trying to make. She said, quote, “Don’t be surprised if you hit a man, and he hits you back . . .
“If you make the choice as a woman who’s four-foot-three and you decide to hit a guy who’s six feet tall, and you’re the last thing he wants to deal with that day, and he hits you back, you cannot be surprised.”
Smith apologized for his comments yesterday.
